It’s unit 1 and I am already wondering about the language we are hearing from the Federal Government about Indigenous communities. How hard is it to use the name that is respectful?

When was the last time I used the term Aboriginal? I cannot even remember. Years ago. I don’t hear any of my friends call themselves aboriginal. I hear them call themselves by their nation’s name and at time as Indigenous. Is this a regional difference? I suspect not. More likely another disrespectful communication the federal government has created against our Indigenous peoples.

Some quick research shows the term Aboriginal has been one that originates from a latin meaning of “not original”. No wonder we have moved away from this term. Indigenous people is a term that better conveys there are differences between the nations that are part of the Indigenous peoples of Canada.
